Skilling girls towards poverty alienation in Eastern Uganda

Women and girls with disabilities in Uganda

Hi, my name is Hadijah Kisembo am a woman with a disability fundraising on behalf of the International Policy Center for Sustainable Development (IPC4SD) to reach out, support, empower and change the lives of 2,500 women and girls with different disabilities from different complex to reach parts of Uganda. We apply a person-centred inclusive approach. On average each of these women has 2 children or more which means over 1,000 children will be indirect beneficiaries who need healthcare and education. Some women and girls need wheelchairs, white canes, interpreters for sign language, crutches, surgical boots among others to enhance their ability to be able to participate and engage actively.

Women and girls with different disabilities have remained vulnerable to poverty due to stigma and disability-related exclusion in their communities. Many were denied education, lacked support from their families and faced discrimination first as disabled and as girl children influenced by stigma, culture and environment. Many of them are single mothers living with children whose fathers denied responsibility and would never want to associate with these women due to the stigma. Among the challenges they face is a lack of employment with no income-generating activities to support and sustain their daily living hence living in abject poverty with their children.
